Filipino American History Month

What is Filipino History Month?

October 18th of 1587 was the date of the first documented proof of Filipinos in the Continental United States. In October of 1988, the Filipino American National Historical Society declared October as Filipino American History Month. Again in October of 1993, the Washington State University Filipino American Student Association officially became a Registered Student Organization here on campus, and has annually celebrated Filipino American History Month every October since.

During October, we provide a series of educational workshops and events that provide the university community with a chance to learn about Filipino American culture and history. Workshops will cover a wide variety of topics such as Philippine history, immigration, and even a workshop that will educate people on authentic Philippine cuisine!

The goal of Filipino American History Month is to impart an educational opportunity for students here at WSU to learn about a culture that they may have never learned about otherwise considering that no formal classes are offered specifically for Filipino culture or history. Our workshops will allow others to take advantage of an unique and culturally educational experience by learning and having fun!
